Search Tips

Before you Start Your Search

Searching Rome Review is relatively easy.  But before we provide some tips on how to do it, let's clarify what you can expect to find and how exactly the Rome Review search engine looks for what you want.

Rome Review is essentially a database that contains three types of information: Listings, Reviews and Replies.

Listings are typically the profile of a local Roman business, but it could also be a discussion topic or a link to another online resource.

Reviews are written by registered users about a Listing.  Replies are written in response to Reviews.

When you initiate a keyword search, the Rome Review search engine examines:

  • All content in Reviews and Replies
  • Listing titles, street addresses and categories
  • Listing search tags

Keyword Searches

To begin searching Rome Review, type in a keyword or keywords into the search bar above.  The page that follows will produce a list of search results sorted by Date Added in reverse chronology, meaning the "Newest" first.

(Note: we used to have it sorted according to "Popularity" but then realized that in doing so, it always showed the same thing. You can still sort according to "Popularity". See below...)

It is also possible to sort the search results according to the following criteria:

  • by Title (which sorts the name of the Listings alphabetically);
  • by Type (Listing, Review and Reply);
  • by Category (which sorts the names of the categories alphabetically);
  • by User (which sorts the name of the users alphabetically);
  • by Rating (best rated listed first or vice versa);

Search Filters

If the search provides more results than you would care to sift through, use the Search Filters. You have three options:

  • Where: instead of searching ALL of Rome, choose a specific zone, for example Trastevere or Historic Center West.  If you are not sure where in Rome you need to look, select the "Not sure? View Finder" option in the jump menu to help you identify the correct zone.
  • What: this lets you limit the results to a specific type.  For example, if you aren't interested in the Reviews or Replies, limit the search to only the Listings.
  • Who: The Rome Review Community is made up of four groups: Resident; Tourist, Student; and Business Traveler.  This filter is useful if you want to limit the results to the Reviews and Replies of just one of these four groups.

Category Quicklink Searches

 The Category Quicklinks, located in the far left column, can be helpful if you are not sure what you are looking for.  Clicking on a Macro-Category that interests you will reveal a list of Categories, and in some cases, Sub-Categories.  Clicking on any of these Categories or Sub-Categories will produce a list of search results that correspond ONLY to that selection.

NOTE: If after clicking a Category Quicklink you choose to do a Keyword search, THE SEARCH WILL BE LIMITED TO THAT CATEGORY ONLY.

In the event there aren't any results, press the "Reset the Search" button or click the "Home Page" link in the top left to access the entire Rome Review database.

Concluding Your Search

Clicking the title in the search results will take you to the Listing, Review or Reply that interests you. And that's it!
